"So what happened? Was there a precipitating event?"
"How'd you lose the weight, exactly?"
"How'd you start?"
These are some of the questions that I've been getting since my first blog post. I'll do my best to answer them in my following posts.
The quick answer is this: I'd been on the diet roller coaster for years. Restrict/binge; gain/lose; up/down; over and over. If I wanted different results, I needed to try something different. But what?
My husband & I had just moved to a new area. We had sold our townhouse & moved into an apartment. New surroundings, new neighbors........a new life?
I got it into my head that this move could be a new beginning for me - so I decided to make a change. ONE change. I decided to get active. The diet piece could wait for another time.
There was a YMCA within walking distance to our new home, but I was intimidated by the thought of exercising in a gym. People might see me, laugh at me, MOCK me. I had no idea of what I'd even do in a gym. The gym equipment & the gym culture were totally foreign to me. I had purchased 2 gym memberships at different times earlier in life, but didn't do much with them - other than compare myself with all of the 'beautiful bodies' that I resented (but wanted so badly for myself).
I began with walking. I made a point to get out & walk every day, even if it was for a short time. After years of being couch-bound, I was pretty deconditioned. Walking uphill was a real challenge. I walked around my new neighborhood, did laps around our apartment community.....and I kept walking past the YMCA that I was so scared to explore.
Spoiler: I did eventually go in. :-) More on that in the next post.
